Monday, June 20 2016: This deal has a slew of interesting implications for designers and networking in general. One of the biggest possibilities for designers is the new advantage of sitting down with either leads or clients in meetings and being able to talk about relevant information with confidence. Here’s how it will work: Microsoft’s personal digital assistant, Cortana, is good today for doing simple things for users, such as seeing what’s on their calendars and then recommending to them the best times for them to leave their location to be on time for a meeting. That’s still quite limited, which is what Microsoft is hoping will change thanks to its LinkedIn acquisition.Because of LinkedIn’s voluminous data on professionals, it may be possible in the near future for designers to walk into a meeting with their leads or clients and know everything about their professional backgrounds, résumés, and goals.... + continue reading

Monday, June 13 2016: More than any other medium, the web offers the opportunity to redesign, republish, reedit, revamp, and redo our work over and over again.Print designers hit the deadline at 5pm on a Friday, send the artwork to a printer, and forget it (at least, that’s the plan). Web designers hit the deadline at 5pm on a Friday, push the update to the server, and then start working through the client’s revisions (at least, that’s the fear). We know that trends in design, and wider culture, affect how sites are received. We also know that developing technology present new opportunities. And more often than not, we don’t know what’s going to work best for a client until we can gather analytics, and we can’t gather analytics until the site’s live; so the nature of web design is to always be iterating. On the other hand, design patterns only become design patterns because they are user patterns first. When a... + continue reading

Graphic-Design-Trends-2016-Kwik-Computing
Tuesday, May 31 2016: More than the patterns that emerge from the Popular feeds on Dribbble and Behance, design trends can be a mysterious thing. They’re influenced by culture and media, past and present, technology, fashion, and other industries. They come and go, but it’s hard to say exactly when. Madeleine Morley at The American Institute for Graphic Arts (AIGA) says: “A trend never simply emerges for a single year and then disappears in a puff of smoke. Instead, an aesthetic becomes popular gradually, even mysteriously, over time before fizzling out slowly without much notice at all.” The design trends we’ll be covering here didn’t magically materialize in late 2015; trends take time to peak, and you’ve likely seen many of them in one form or another during the last couple years. But even if you’re not one to follow the trends, as a designer, it’s smart to be aware of the shifts going on in your... + continue reading
Tuesday, May 31 2016: Cost-per-print is an important factor to take into account when determining which printer to purchase. It can also be used to monitor the efficiency of your machine and supply usage. For example, if your cost-per-print trend increases over time, your office could be inefficiently using your printer or the printer is becoming less efficient. There's two ways to go about calculating your cost-per-print. The first option is to have a print provider do it during a print assessment, via print management software installed on your device.
